[From here.]

Out the back door, and she's running, and the grass under her feet is damp but that won't save it for long, and there's a large body of water around here somewhere, she can feel it --

Charlie pulls up, panting, at the edge of the lake; she drops to one knee, head bowed, hands clenched, fighting it.

(like having a)

The grass around her is smoldering.

(daughter)

A choked sound, half gasp and half sob, escapes her; her hands dig into the earth.

The surface of the lake near her begins to steam.

Beads rattle as he cocks his head sideways.

"How's that work?"

A beat.

"And do you have a name?"

"Jack Sparrow," he finishes, gesturing first at himself and then at the ship. "Of the Black Pearl, as you can see."

He looks a little suspicious, but when he speaks again, Jack sounds almost mollified.

"That she is, luv. She's a treasure in truth."

"So long as you don't intend to go boiling the lake again," he says dryly, "then I'm curious, savvy?"

He takes this in stride.

"Ah."

Jack looks at her with interest.

"Goes with your hair, luv."

"The red's much more better. Like a bright flame yourself, aye?"

He leans further on the rail, watching her.

"Seems fitting."

"Different enough what you needed a whole lake?"

Jack sounds startled.

"Now that's a new one."

There's a thoughtful pause, and then, "No, don't believe I know her."

"Ah."

A moment passes in silence, and then Jack grins wickedly at her.

"Might be best you didn't talk with her, luv -- or else be able to get to the sea, instead."

And if something of longing gleams in the black eyes as he says this, well, what of it?

"'Course she does."

Jack cocks his head to one side, setting beaded braids swinging.

"Expect she feels that she knows you, aye?"

He makes a face of disgust at this, then shakes his head.

"Don't know exactly what to tell you, luv. I don't have such pretty tricks meself. But there's those here who do, savvy? Might be someone could help you find a more better way to manage, should trouble come calling again."

Jack gives her a look.

"What I mean is, luv, that there's lots of people here what have interesting abilities and little magics of their own. Might could be one of them could help you with your--"

He waves both hands in the air, fluttering his fingers to imitate dancing flames.

"--savvy?"

The grin that spreads over his face is absolutely devilish.

It's more appropriate than usual, as Jack promptly says,

"Look for a fellow what's named Adam Young. Special sort, he is. About so tall--"

Swaying slightly, he holds up a hand to show Adam's height. As he's still on the Pearl's deck and Charlie's on shore, this may be less than helpful.

"Brown hair. Might see him with a red-haired lass, the lovely Alanna."
